The Technique of Raised Bed Gardening
Once you have chosen the materials you want to make your garden walls out of, decided how to plan out your garden and figured out the right spot, then you need to set up the garden itself. There are a couple of ways to go about this process. Each one has its own steps that while not tricky or hard, are very necessary to the process. The first way one can get their raised bed garden started is through the process of double digging. Double digging is a technique that creates very fertile, rich soil by mixing different nutrients throughout your dirt. In order to do this you first want to already have the soil in your garden. Once you have your soil you then want to remove a layer of top soil from the dirt. After the top soil has been removed, you then need to loosen the soil beneath the top layer (that is now exposed). Once this is done, replace the topsoil and mix in many different types of organic materials to the dirt. The mixing is perhaps the most important part to the process, as it works on two levels. Not only will the mixing action till the soil and create good loose dirt where your plants will be able to properly grow their roots, but it will also enrich the nutrient content of your soil. However, while double digging works, it is only a process that should only be taken on by the most serious gardeners, as it is very labor intensive. Yet, if you are up to the task, it can be a very effective way to begin your gardening process.
